Like That // A Poem

There's a train of thought
that focuses on people being able
to die of a broken heart.
</3
Just like that.

And so, while people always say
there is no room for apologies,
especially not ones as belated as this:
why bother? eh? nah, no need for that.
No point in trying to fix
what has already been torn apart.
But let me tell you something darling,
I disagree with all that.

In fact, I should have done this sooner,
when instead I just got on with my life.
Barely letting the thought of you cross my mind,
even just for a moment. I ripped you off
like a plaster, left you scrunched up,
bloody and broken. I was thoughtless,
young and naive, silly and heartless
And I know this is coming months too late,
but darling, I need you to know
I'm sorry I treated you like that.

I know I can't go back and change the past,
Can't change the way I treated you.
Laughing off your courage.
Ignoring your messages.
Not making room for a boy who
thought himself in love. I know now,
I should have been straight with you
from the start. Oh my darling,
I just didn't like you like that.

Hindsight is a terrible thing, you know.
I thought I already knew that. But life
has a way of testing the lessons
we think we have already learnt,
the ones we think
we mastered a long time ago.
I failed you, my darling, I know that.

I was hesitant
where you were fearless
and darling, the sad, awful truth
is that you deserve so much better than that.

  1. So beautiful. I especially love the first stanza. I also like how you formatted the poem, with each stanza being justified opposite to the previous.
