Today I turn nineteen. Nineteen! Is it silly to say that I’m oh-so-ready for nineteen? It just has such a nice ring to it, don't you think? Nineteen.

I thought I would be, but I am not all that sad to see eighteen go. I have never been one to lament the process of getting older, and I am rather fond of new beginnings. I do find it most peculiar how one’s perception of age shifts as one traverses the years, though. 19 sounded impossibly adult to me before, but now that I have arrived here – on platform 19 – it seems so very, entirely, youthful. My entire grown-up life ahead of me, should I be so lucky. I can't wait to see where this journey will take me.

I do want to say this though- I'm proud of the person I was at eighteen. I'm so, so proud of everything I've done this past year. It's been a hard one - no one said India would be easy - but I've learned things this year that I never would have otherwise. So in keeping with tradition, here's 18 things I learned at 18:

  1.    The more you go your own way, the more you’ll inspire others to do the same.
Never put yourself above learning new things.
  2.   You will always make it through the rough days.
  3.   Sharing your authentic voice sets you apart.
  4.   Age is irrelevant. If you believe in something, speak your truth.
  5.   Ask for help when you need it.
  6.   Never put deadlines on your dreams.
  7.   Seek to find yourself outside of your comfort zone.
  8.   Create as honestly, unapologetically, and powerfully as you can.
  9.   If something is important to someone else, it is important.
  10.   The more something seems crazy now, the better a story it will be.
  11.   You're never alone when you have faith.
  12.   You don’t have to be naturally good at something to master it.
  13.   See small wins as massive successes.
  14.   Never treat anyone like they are less important than someone else.
  15.   You are never only one thing.
  16.   You're never too young to think yourself in love. Dive head first, think later.
  17.    All of the things you wanted to do will fall away unless you actively pursue them.
  18.    Begin, or begin again.

Thank you, eighteen for getting me so far.
I'll miss the year we've had together - I doubt I'll ever have one like it again!

hello nineteen, I'm so pleased to finally meet you.
